If they do have a gemstone any or all can be used against them. In the video at the beginning a card was discarded randomly by Infernal Shadow without the air gemstone being in affect. He would have had to have the air gemstone in order for that to have happened. Also the shield can block Thorny grasp and guardians grip when you draw them and any card effect that is directed at you from an another opponent during their turn. Shield of reflection can be used to direct thorny grasp or guardians grip to another opponent if you draw it and have a shield of reflection in your possession to do so. Also Melissa could have continued with her Crystal Light Lantern. The Guardian tile would not have prevented her from continuing her turn.
